FINDLAY, Ohio (May 18)—The city of Findlay has formally taken over the former Brandman Corp. tire dump near its downtown area and vows to have the approximately 750,000 whole and shredded tires there removed by the end of the year, according to Findlay Mayor Tony Iriti.
The city already has contracted with Liberty Tire Services to remove about 140,000 whole tires starting around June 1, while the Hancock County landfill will take the shredded tires to line a new cell, Iriti said. The city soon will submit a timeline to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, which the agency will approve in a formal order, an Ohio EPA spokeswoman said.
Jerry Vestal, former owner of the site, was fined $503,552 in November for violating state scrap tire laws, but the fine was reduced on the condition that he would sell the site to the city for $1.
