WASHINGTON (March 23)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has made changes in its tire safety labeling requirements for vehicles, with an effective date of Sept. 1.
The new rule allows vehicle manufacturers to show light truck tire load range identification and tire service information on the placard or label, among several amendments to the standard that was first issued in November 2002 and first amended in June 2004.
While the Rubber Manufacturers Association is still studying the document, an RMA spokesman said, the association was pleased that the agency granted its request to allow placement of the load index and speed symbol on the placard. "They said the load index and speed symbol information weren't crucial to safety, but could be useful to people buying replacement tires," the spokesman said.
