DALLAS (Jan. 31)—Goodyear is launching more rugged versions of its Fortera and Wrangler sport-utility vehicle tire lines, using steel belts and aramid fiber to improve both on- and off-road performance.
Goodyear calls the new performance enhancements "SilentArmor Technology." The tires will be launched at the company's North American dealer conference in Dallas the week of Jan. 31.
The Wrangler tire will be available to consumers in May with 24 sizes in 15- to 17-inch rim diameters. The Fortera tire initially will be available in March with 25 sizes in 15- to 20-inch rim diameters.
"Although most of their driving is on the road, truck owners want the capability to drive on any terrain," said Todd Hershberger, Goodyear marketing manager for light truck tires. "They expect their tires to emulate the performance of their trucks. They have to be tough to get the job done, and they also have to be comfortable and quiet like a passenger car."
The tires feature two steel belts and a layer of Kevlar as well as Goodyear's Durawall rubber compound to reinforce the sidewall and Rim Guard, which protects the wheels from curb damage.
The Wrangler tire carries a 50,000-mile limited treadwear warranty, a 30-day trial period and national warranty service. The Fortera has the same options, including a 70,000-mile limited treadwear warranty.
