Laboratory testing of latex adhesive backings for tufted carpet is critical yet challenging to precisely duplicate the application process. It is even more difficult to accurately and reproducibly test fire retardency--an important feature of many tufted carpets. With focus on fire retardency tests, this presentation will highlight key tests such as delamination, LOI, radiant panel and pill test, and then present a unique analytical method that allows the calculation of the latex-to-filler(s) ratio of compound. We will present the analytical solution using chemical decompositions of various common fillers and describe necessary calculations to improve accuracy using an Excel® spreadsheet.
