Continental suspends tire production in Mayfield
MAYFIELD, Ky.-Continental Tire North America Inc. has suspended indefinitely tire production at its Mayfield plant, putting 650 hourly and 80 salaried employees out of their jobs effective Dec. 31.
As announced earlier, mixing and warehousing operations will continue.
Conti said it is offering severance benefits based upon years of service to laid-off salaried employees, an undisclosed number of whom have accepted positions at other company facilities.
Affected hourly employees will receive layoff benefits under the collective bargaining agreement between Conti and the United Steelworkers of America, the company said.
The union broke off negotiations with Conti Nov. 19 over a severance package for hourly production workers. The tire maker said it is willing to discuss a severance package but no talks are scheduled.
