MUNICH, Germany (Sept. 24)—Pirelli S.p.A. has developed a self-inflating motorcycle tire, dubbed the Pirelli Safety Wheel System, which re-inflates automatically in the case of a puncture or loss of air pressure.
Pirelli developed the device in cooperation with Brembo S.p.A., an Italian company specializing in braking systems and motorcycle components. It was launched at the Intermot 2004 motorcycle and scooter show in Munich.
The system is designed to reduce the risks of motorcycle tire punctures or loss of inflation pressure, Pirelli said. The system comprises three components: a special rim with an internal tube of compressed air; a valve that regulates the passage of pressure between the tube and the tire; and a system that monitors the pressure and temperature of the tires.
