COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 14)—Ohio has cleaned up some 30 million scrap tires since 1990, according to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
Twenty-two million of those tires have been removed since 1995 under the aegis of the state's scrap tire fee, which amounts to $1 per new tire sold in the state. The other cleanups were local actions, according to an OEPA spokeswoman.
With the completion of the Kirby Tire stockpile cleanup, scheduled for June 2006, the state will start concentrating on the cleanup of some two dozen smaller scrap tire sites, ranging from 30,000 to 750,000 tires each, the spokeswoman said.
