PITTSBURGH/NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 25)—The United Steelworkers of America and the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union have formed a strategic alliance to coordinate activities and share knowledge to strengthen each organization and better support their members.
The venture represents a commitment by the unions to conduct joint activities and build on their rank-and-file programs to "raise a collective voice on issues facing the labor movement—especially industrial unions," the labor organizations said.
The presidents of the two unions—Boyd Young of PACE and Leo W. Gerard of the USWA—will retain primary authority for implementing the partnership and a coordinating committee made up of appointed officers and key staff will meet regularly to monitor a facilitate implementation.
The USWA represents more than 600,000 members and PACE more than 275,000 members in the U.S. and Canada.
