AKRON (Jan. 16)—Goodyear will repair its Spirit of America airship, disabled when it crashed during a night landing at its home base in Carson, Calif., in December.
Preliminary work already has been started to prepare the airship for its return to operation, said Robert J. Keegan, Goodyear chairman and CEO. The rebuilding project will take place at the tire maker's Wingfoot Lake airship hanger near Akron.
The blimp, carrying the pilot and a cameraman, crashed while trying to land at an airport in Carson, located south of Los Angeles, at about 10 p.m. Dec. 3. The blimp came loose from its moorings and drifted into a truck during the night landing. The pilot and cameraman were not seriously injured, but the cameraman was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released, a company spokeswoman said.
