SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Dec. 9)—Retreading industry representatives have scheduled meetings Dec. 15 with board members and staff of the California Integrated Waste Management Board to argue their case that retreaders shouldn't be included in the CIWMB's new Waste Tire Manifest System.
The system requires retreadable casings to be treated as scrap tires, and demands that retreaders fill out as many as four separate forms for each load of casings they haul and process, said Harvey Brodsky, managing director of the Tire Retread Information Bureau. TRIB estimates the rule will cost California retreaders more than $500,000 annually in lost time and may discourage retreading in California.
The rule is totally unnecessary, according to Brodsky. "You can take all the tires dumped by retreaders in a given year, put them in the trunk of your car, and have room left over," he said.
