DETROIT (Nov. 4)—Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. has selected a site near Conyers, Ga., for a thermoplastic elastomers plant that should be operational by the second half of 2004. The factory, slated to have 10 million pounds of annual capacity for the firm's Sumitomo TPE, will supply Sumitomo's automotive industry customers in North America. Production initially will encompass thermoplastic vulcanizate and thermoplastic olefin resins for body seals, interior sheet skins and air bag covers, according to Sumitomo Chemical America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary. The firm anticipates hitting full capacity by early 2005, according to David Risetter, sales and marketing manager. Sumitomo currently imports the material from its Chiba, Japan, facility.
