HAYWARD, Calif. (Oct. 10)—Mendel Biotechnology Inc. has received a federal grant to discover and develop naturally occurring plant genes that control the production of latex rubber. The privately owned biotechnology company is working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Western Regional Research Center and the University of Arizona. Funded by a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research grant, the trio's research will focus on increasing the amount of rubber produced in the guayule plant.
