CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 26)—Continental Tire North America Inc. will reduce production at its Mayfield, Ky., plant by more than 3,000 units per day, leaving 200 hourly workers without jobs by mid-December. The change will decrease daily tire production to 10,900 units from 14,000, the firm said. The tire maker cited extreme competitive pressure the past several years, including escalating social benefits and health insurance costs. Continental said the Mayfield factory, currently employing 1,300, is its highest cost producer in North America.
