ST. LOUIS (Sept. 19)—The United Steelworkers of America and Bridgestone/Firestone resumed master contract negotiations Sept. 18 in St. Louis. The talks cover 6,000 hourly workers at eight BFS tire and rubber facilities. The USWA and Michelin North America will start back up contract talks the week of Oct. 6 in Knoxville, Tenn., covering 4,000 workers at three Uniroyal Goodrich tire plants, according to a USWA spokesman. Talks with both had been suspended pending the ratification of the Goodyear contract talks. The union also will have to deal with negotiations at Yokohama Tire Corp.´s Salem, Va., facility, which has been working day-to-day since its contract expired July 23, and at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.'s Findlay, Ohio, tire factory, where the agreement expires Oct. 31. The USWA previously said it would present the Goodyear contract as a pattern to the other tire makers.
