BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. (Sept. 17)—Some 918,000 scrap tires were removed from parks and roadsides in the "Great American Cleanup 2003" campaign sponsored by Keep America Beautiful Inc., a national litter prevention organization. This is 143 percent more than the 377,000 collected in the 2002 campaign, according to BFS Retail & Commercial Operations L.L.C., whose Firestone Tire & Service Centers acted as a partner in the campaign. The company-owned tire stores worked in their localities to remove scrap tires from area parks and waterways, and also served as drop-off locations for scrap tires, the company said. BFS Retail & Commercial is a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas Holding Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Tokyo-based Bridgestone Corp.
