KOMAKI, Japan (Sept. 4)—Tokai Rubber Industries Ltd. has selected a site near Jiaxing in China's Zhejiang Province for an anti-vibration rubber products plant to supply the expanding Japanese transplant vehicle assembly industry there. Tokai Rubber, which claims leadership in AVS rubber components in Japan, will spend $13.8 million to build the plant, which is expected on stream by January 2005. The 107,600-sq.-ft. unit in the Jiaxing Economic Development Zone will employ 270 and generate annual sales of $11.2 million in the first full year of operation, Tokai said. The facility will be Tokai's second AVS factory in China. The company's existing AVS unit, Tokai Rubber Tianjin Co. Ltd., opened in Tianjin in 1995 coupled together with an automotive hose facility. Tokai invested about $80 million in 2001-02 to double the factory's size to 1.56 million square feet and expand the AVS and automotive hose capacities.
