INDIO, Calif. (Aug. 29)—A judge in the California Superior Court in Indio has denied Bridgestone Corp.'s motion to be excluded as a defendant in a class action lawsuit which seeks to force Bridgestone/Firestone, its U.S. subsidiary, to recall 30 million Firestone Steeltex light truck radials. Tokyo-based Bridgestone had argued that the court had no jurisdiction to include a foreign company in the litigation, said Joseph L. Lisoni, the Pasadena, Calif., attorney who leads the class action suit. "Now Bridgestone is responsible for any illegal action that Bridgestone/Firestone allegedly committed," Lisoni said. But Joseph Weinstein, Bridgestone's U.S. counsel, downplayed the significance of the ruling. "This is not a finding of liability," Weinstein said. "The only question here is whether it is appropriate for Bridgestone to remain in the case."
