KINSTON, N.C. (Jan.29)—An explosion at a West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. plant in Kinston this afternoon caused multiple fatalities and injuries and left many workers trapped inside the blazing building, said Kinston City Manager Ralph Clark. An estimated 11 people were injured, five critically, according to CNN reports. "Some of the injured went to hospitals and some of the uninjured were transported by air and bus to nearby churches," Clark said. "But right now we are still working on getting people out." Clark estimated West had about 200 employees working the day shift when the explosion occurred. The cause of the explosion is not yet known, but black smoke and flames have engulfed the building, destroying about 25 percent of the facility, Clark said. The plant is located in an industrial park on the outskirts of Kinston. The facility makes syringes and intravenous equipment.
