BRINDISI, Italy (Dec. 19)—Chimica D'Agostino S.p.A. officially has ended negotiations to purchase a methylene diphenylene isocyanate plant in Brindisi from Dow Poliuretani Italia S.r.l., which is part of Dow Chemical Co.'s Dow Polyurethanes business group, following eight months of negotiations and a letter of intent signed Nov. 8 by the firms. A Dow official said the firm has no alternative other than to close the facility, which produced about 165 million pounds of MDI annually. Approximately 126 employees will lose their jobs following the closure. The factory, which had been in an extended shutdown since December 2001, likely will be demolished sometime in the first quarter of 2003, the official said.
