Machine vision system supplier Cognex Corp. unveiled two high-performance systems for automatically identifying tires and wheels: the TIS-8000 Tire Identification System and the WIS-8000 Wheel Identification System. Both use the company´s PatMax geometric pattern matching technology and each are equipped with a PC-based machine vision frame grabber, a Sony XC-55 camera kit and identification and verification application software, the firm said. The TIS-8000 provides high-accuracy, in-process verification and identification of tires using machine vision software for recognizing tire treads and sidewalls, Cognex said. Applications include tracking and sorting tires during manufacturing, verifying correct models prior to mounting and guaranteeing the correct sequence of tires prior to shipping. The WIS-8000 automatically recognizes wheel-spoke patterns, wheel finish and other features to ensure the presence of correct wheels, the firm said. Uses include identifying wheels prior to balancing to trigger proper balance routine and guaranteeing the correct wheels are paired with the correct tires for a specific vehicle.
