BANGKOK, Thailand (Nov. 4)—GE Toshiba Silicones will invest $50 million in a silicones finishing plant in Thailand that eventually will have the capacity to turn out 45,000 metric tons of silicone fluids and elastomers per year. The facility is being built on a 19.3-acre site near Map Ta Phut, Thailand, the site of a GE Toshiba Silicones and Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. Ltd. silicone raw materials factory under construction. The finishing plant should become operational in the first half of 2004, GE Toshiba said. The facility will be the firm's third wholly owned finishing plant in the Pacific, joining sites in Ohta, Japan, and Shanghai, China. The factory will employ about 100 engineers, technicians and other staff.
