LIONILLE, Pa. (Oct. 24)—West Pharmaceutical Services Inc.'s net income fell to $3.6 million in the third quarter from $5.6 million in the corresponding period last year while sales rose to $104.9 million from $96.5 million. The sales hike was spurred by the Pharmaceutical Systems Division's 11.5-percent increase to $102.9 million. That growth is a result of continued strong demand for the division's pharmaceutical components, the firm said, and reflects improvement in North America, Europe and Asia. Net income was impacted by higher expenses in several areas and non-recurring charges. Both sales and earnings were negatively affected by a drop in Drug Delivery Systems Division revenues to $2 million from $4.2 million last year and an operating loss of $4.1 million for the period. The loss primarily was caused by an absence of high-margin license revenue and a $1 million increase in net spending.
