AKRON (Sept. 18)—Goodyear shipments of consumer tires in August decreased compared to a year ago while shipments of commercial tires increased, but both categories lagged behind industry levels, according to the Akron tire maker's monthly investor report released Sept. 17. Industry shipments of consumer replacements were down 8 percent from last year's August levels, and Goodyear's shipments were below that level. The company's shipments of original equipment consumer tires also were down, while the industry's picked up 3 percent. On the commercial side, industry shipments of replacement tires in August rose 18 percent, while Goodyear shipments also climbed but below industry levels. Likewise in commercial OE, Goodyear shipments grew but not at the pace of the industry, where shipments surged 23 percent compared to 2001.
