Advantages of cast polyurethane include high hardness elastomers with good physical and dynamic properties and dimensional uniformity from a liquid cast process. Possible tire components include apex and bead coverings. However, polyurethane softening during tire cure cycles eliminated PU as a possible tire component. Recently developed PU systems with the ability to maintain modulus up to 360F can overcome this process disadvantage and offer opportunities for revisiting PU tire components. Some future PU systems that can endure tire cure cycles and offer lower cost are being developed. These systems might be of interest as elastomers for run-flat inserts as well.
