CLERMONT-FERRAND, France (Aug. 30)—Groupe Michelin is seeking to re-establish tire production in Algeria after a hiatus of nearly 10 years, the company has confirmed. However, the return is subject to ongoing negotiations with the Algerian government, according to a spokeswoman for the French group, who declined to give further details of the planned project. According to news reports in Europe, Michelin has set up a sales/trading company called Michelin Algerie that will allow the company to resume industrial activity when the time is right. Michelin mothballed its car tire plant in Algiers in 1993 amidst a wave of anti-foreign violence at that time.
