AKRON (Aug. 22)ùAlan L. Ockene, former president and CEO of General Tire Inc., died Aug. 20 in Akron. He was 71. Ockene spent almost four years at the helm of General Tire and became the first American to serve on the executive board of Germany's Continental A.G., which had purchased the company in 1987. He spoke five languages, including French, Spanish, Portuguese and German. Prior to joining General, Ockene spent 17 years at Goodyear, first as managing director of the firm's German subsidiary, then as vice president for Europe and Africa. He also served the company as vice president for Goodyear Aerospace and was vice president for Latin America when he joined General. In 1995, with a year left on his five-year contract as General's president and CEO, Ockene opted not to stay with the Conti subsidiary in its move from Akron to Charlotte, N.C.
