PITTSBURGH (Aug. 2)—Glass, coatings and chemical producer PPG Industries Inc. has reduced its indirect rubber parts supply base to only six fabricator/distributors from 77 last fall. PPG said it expects to save more than 10 percent annually on its rubber product purchases, including gaskets, hoses and conveyor belts used in its manufacturing operations. The six preferred rubber fabricator/distributors are: GXH Bayou Gaskets Co. in Houston; F.N. Sheppard & Co. in Erlanger, Ky.; Gooding & Shields Co., Pittsburgh; Motion Industries, Birmingham, Ala.; Summers Rubber Co., Cleveland; and Goodall Rubber in Oshawa, Ontario. The move is consistent with industrywide, cost-saving vendor consolidations which probably will continue in the U.S. industrial market, said Adam J. Fein, president of Pembroke Consulting Inc., a Philadelphia-based consultancy firm for distributors and manufacturers.
