WASHINGTON (July 17)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation of 192,000 Phantom A/P tires made for Discount Tire Co. by Michelin North America Inc. NHTSA took this investigatory first step after Michelin announced a consumer satisfaction campaign replacing 30,000 of those tires, though neither the agency nor the tire maker has received any complaints about them. In a news release, Michelin "reiterated its continued assistance" to NHTSA.
