HAYWARD, Calif. (June 4)—Mendel Biotechnology Inc., a Hayward-based biotechnology firm, has won a Small Business Innovative Technology grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for research to double the latex production of the guayule plant. Mendel´s research will concentrate on manipulating the plant's natural latex-producing genes for higher yield. Guayule, a desert shrub native to the Southwest, is the subject of an intensive USDA commercialization effort because of its high-quality, hypoallergenic latex.
