WASHINGTON (June 3)—The proposed new performance standard for passenger and light truck tires "cannot be justified, as no advantage, compared to existing requirements, can be proved for the customer and for the improvement of traffic safety," the European Tire and Rim Technical Organization told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The proposed rule will lead to heavier, overengineered tires and a loss of fuel efficiency, the ETRTO said. The Rubber Manufacturers Association, the Tire Association of North America and other tire organizations are expected to file comments on the standard by the June 5 deadline.
