LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 24)—Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has settled an Arkansas lawsuit in which a Cooper tire allegedly lost its tread and caused an accident that killed four people and crippled two others. On May 23, Judge George Howard Jr. of the Little Rock federal district court ruled plaintiffs' attorneys could introduce testimony that Cooper had deliberately burned documents relating to the case, but Cooper said in a statement Howard's ruling had no bearing on its decision to settle. The amount of the settlement was not revealed, and Cooper said its insurance would cover the payment. Attorneys for the plaintiffs could not be reached for comment.
