AKRON (May 24)—Tire machinery maker Akron Equipment Co. is shutting down its Akron facility due to the slumping market and tough foreign competition, a move that will cost about 100 people their jobs. The tentative closing date is June 13. The company—in business since the early 20th century—issued a 60-day warning notice to its union workers on April 11, he said. The shutdown will affect 37 active hourly workers and 15 active salaried employees; many of the 80 hourly and 20 salaried employees at the site only a year ago were laid off, the company said.
