CHESHIRE, England (March 19)—Healthcare product manufacturer SSL International P.L.C. has sold 21 active over-the-counter pharmaceutical brands, dedicated manufacturing equipment at SSL´s Guernsey and Peterlee plants in the United Kingdom and transferred 13 inactive trademarks to Thornton & Ross Ltd. for about $19 million in cash. In addition, about $845,000 in SSL stock will be sold to Thornton & Ross. The sale was prompted by the company´s complicated over-the-counter U.K. portfolio, Chief Executive Brian Buchan said, which had an "adverse impact on our manufacturing efficiency, customer service and marketing effectiveness." The disposal, which represents about 15 percent of the firm's U.K. over-the-counter sales, will allow SSL to focus on its remaining portfolio, he said.
