MACON, Ga. (March 11)—April 18 is the date for a Macon tire distributor and six individuals to be sentenced for their participation in a "gray market" scheme in which they sought to defraud the U.S. government of excise taxes due on medium truck tires. Palmer Industries Inc., John Lenderman, Ralph Canney, Sergio Gonzalez, Raymond Garcia, Paul (Nat) Poston Jr. and Charles McCullough all pleaded guilty to various charges related to the scheme, in which tires purchased for overseas export were instead sold in the U.S. Jimmy D. Lunsford, who refused to plead, was convicted Feb. 14 of conspiracy and four counts of filing false tax returns. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 21, though a Justice Department spokesman said sentencing dates are often postponed for various reasons.
