WASHINGTON (Feb. 20)—Requiring the tire identification number to be molded on both sides of a tire won't enhance tire safety and may even hinder it, the Rubber Manufacturers Association has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Coupled "the confusion and chaos that would be created among consumers could result in delays in identifying (recalled) tires," the RMA said in comments to the agency. Also, the association objected to NHTSA's proposal regarding disposal of recalled tires.
