BRUSSELS, Belgium (Dec. 20)—Belgian chemicals and pharmaceuticals group Solvay S.A. has entered talks with Italy's Montedison Group to acquire fluorinated chemical products maker Ausimont and its holding company Agora. The activities of Milan, Italy-based Ausimont are very complementary with those of Solvay, the Belgian group said, pointing to the firm's fluoropolymer portfolio, which includes fluoroelastomers, PTFE and melt processable fluoroplastics. Ausimont reports annual sales of about $540 million and has 2,000 employees at operations in Europe and the U.S. Solvay's fluoropolymer business manufactures vinylidene fluoride polymers for areas such as offshore engineering, fiber optic cables, chemical engineering and lithium ion batteries.
