WASHINGTON (Nov. 30)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a new campaign, "Tire Safety: Everything Rides on It." The campaign will include public service announcements on 2,000 U.S. radio stations, print ads in newspapers and magazines and printed materials disseminated by major tire and auto associations as well as NHTSA. The agency announced the program after releasing two tire safety research papers mandated by the Transportation Recall Efficiency, Accountability and Documentation Act. These papers showed, among other things, that nearly one in 10 U.S. drivers have at least one bald tire (1/16 inch or less of tread depth) and that many gas stations have air pumps that are either out of order, lack air pressure gauges or have gauges that overestimate inflation by at least 4 psi.
