SCUNTHORPE, England-An SSL International P.L.C. manufacturing facility that was days away from being sold was destroyed by fire Sept. 26.
The factory, located in Scunthorpe, made the majority of the continence care goods produced by Cheshire, England-based SSL. The company sold the business to Coloplast A.S. in a transaction that closed Oct. 1.
No injuries were reported to the plant's approximately 270 workers following the early-morning blaze, and the company did not give a damage estimate. However, it said there was no damage to the local environment.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, a company spokeswoman said.
The medical glove and condom manufacturer said it had significant stock levels of products made at the factory on hand and there would be no disruption of service.
The 270 employees are on fully paid temporary layoff until the end of October, when SSL is expected to determine the fate of the felled factory, the spokeswoman said.
Because the plant was fully insured, SSL said it did not anticipate any significant impact on profits.
