FAIRLAWN, Ohio (Sept. 18)—Omnova Solutions Inc. reported a net profit of $2.6 million for the third quarter ended Aug. 31, up from the $500,000 income posted in the year-earlier period. The Fairlawn-based firm had sales of $199.9 million in the quarter, nearly even with the $200.1 million posted in the fiscal 2000 third quarter. During the period, the company showed improvement via increased demand in several market areas and moderated raw material costs, according to Kevin McMullen, Omnova chairman and CEO. Year-to-date, Omnova lost $11.7 million, down from a net profit of $4.9 million through nine months last year. Sales through August decreased 4.4 percent to $555.2 million from $580.8 million in fiscal 2000.
