AKRON (Aug. 27)—Advanced Elastomer Systems L.P. unveiled recently developed engineered thermoplastic elastomers during a news conference Aug. 24 that it says form chemical bonds to textiles, metals and other materials. The AES Santoprene thermoplastic elastomers enhanced-bonding grades eliminate the need for adhesives while employing heat and pressure to achieve a bond to a variety of substrates like aluminum, brass, copper, etched fluoropolymers like Teflon, and cold-rolled, galvanized and stainless steel. The material also can be used as a tie-layer to bond two or more incompatible materials and in laminating techniques. Potential markets for the bonding TPEs include appliance, construction, consumer goods, fluid delivery, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, sound insulation, transportation, windows and doors.
