AKRON-The Tire Society will hold its annual meeting Sept. 9-10, 2002, overlapping the International Tire Exhibition and Conference scheduled for Sept. 10-12 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron.
The executive committees of the Tire Society and ITEC are exploring some of the potential areas where both meetings may be of mutual support. Complete details of the interaction between the two meetings will be forthcoming.
``This is a great opportunity for tire professionals worldwide to come together in the same city at the same time for these very important events in our industry,'' said Marion Pottinger, Tire Society vice president. The society for 20 years has met in spring in Akron, presenting 20 to 30 original technical papers on the science and technology of tires. It also features a lecture by a leader in tire mechanics.
Among the Tire Society's keynote speakers over the years have been Patrick W. Rooney, then-chairman and CEO of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.; Yang Rai Cho, chairman of Hankook Tire Manufacturing Co. Ltd.; Yoichiro Kaizaki, chairman and president of Bridgestone Corp. at the time; Lucio Pinto, vice chairman for Pirelli Coordinamento Pneumatici S.p.A.; and Francois Michelin, chairman of Groupe Michelin.
ITEC is sponsored by Rubber & Plastics News, and occurs every other year in Akron. Bob Simmons, RPN publisher and founder of the ITEC conference and trade show, touted the benefits of having the conferences back-to-back.
``Over the last 20 years the Tire Society has brought tire scientists together annually to review new technology that can be applied to tire analysis and design,'' Simmons said. ``These two conferences will include a mix of application-oriented presentations, scientific reviews and reports on scientific research. By developing a stronger relationship with the Tire Society we hope to create a unique tire industry forum that will provide value to the attendees of both events.''
