WASHINGTON (Aug. 15)—The American Society for Testing and Materials has issued standards for tire-derived fuel after a two-year development and review process. These standards should eliminate some of the barriers against acceptance of TDF as a supplemental fuel source, according to Michael Blumenthal, vice president of the Rubber Manufacturers Association and executive director of the Scrap Tire Management Council. "Nowàwe have definitive standards that industry can use for size, distribution, sampling and testing," Blumenthal said. Each year about 125 million tires are consumed as TDF, according to the STMC.
