NOTTINGHAM, England (Aug. 14)—A new tire pyrolisis unit under construction in north central England could become the largest tire recycling operation in Europe. Coalite Smokeless Fuels, a producer of treated coal and other fuels, is building the plant in Bolsover/Derbyshire, with production start-up scheduled for September, according to BMH Chronos Richardson Ltd., a supplier of materials handling equipment to the project. Coalite´s proprietary pyrolysis unit will have an initial annual capacity of 15,000 metric tons of tires, Chronos Richardson said. Within 18 months, capacity will expand to 90,000 tons, or the equivalent of 13 million tires. Chronos Richardson said it is supplying $360,000 worth of equipment that will be used to separate solid by-products, steel and carbon char produced by the pyrolisis process.
