TOKYO (July 18)—Asahi Kasei Corp. is investing $16 million to increase its styrene-butadiene-based thermoplastic elastomer capacity to 100,000 metric tons a year from 60,000 tons. The expansion covers the firm's Tuftec and Asaprene TPEs and should go on stream in April 2002, a company spokesman said. Asaprene TPEs are used as modifiers in asphalt and resins and as base polymers in pressure-sensitive adhesives, sealants and shoe soles, according to company information. Tuftec TPEs are used as plastics modifiers and in adhesives, sealants and elastic compounds.
