KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. (July 5)—Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. and the Steelworkers local staffing its Kings Mountain tire cord plant are far apart on several contract issues, leaving both sides without an agreement after two months of negotiations. Little bargaining progress has been made between the Nashville, Tenn.-based tire maker and United Steelworkers Local 1133, which saw its previous three-year pact expire May 30 after a month of talks. The union's 350 members have been working on an indefinite extension they can terminate with a 30-day notice. The next round of talks is scheduled for July 18-20.
