WASHINGTON (June 19)—The number of U.S. fatalities related to the recalled Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT P-metric light truck tires has risen to 203, according to new information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The latest version of NHTSA's database contains 6,184 reports, up from about 6,000 on Feb. 6. Of the new fatality reports, five came from Bridgestone/Firestone Inc., with the rest coming either from individual reports from the field, or from NHTSA's evaluation of its own Fatality Reporting Analysis System. Of the accident reports in the database, NHTSA said it has updated or verified information on 2,910 reports, and it continues to seek verification of each report. Bridgestone/Firestone announced the recall of the 6.5 million tires, all in size P235/75R15, in August.
