WASHINGTON (May 22)—Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. looks forward to testifying at a new round of hearings on the Ford Explorer and Firestone tires planned by Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. "We applaud Chairman Tauzin's call for additional hearings," Lampe said today in a prepared statement. "As I told Chairman Tauzin last evening, we believe there are significant safety concerns with a substantial segment of Ford Explorers. We look forward to presenting our information to the committee and showing them our tires are safe." Tauzin said he would schedule new hearings as soon as possible after Memorial Day; a spokeswoman for Tauzin said he will confer with relevant subcommittee chairmen before setting dates. Tauzin made his announcement after meeting with Jacques Nasser, Ford Motor Co. CEO, and acknowledged that Nasser discussed with him Ford's plans to recall as many as 13 million Wilderness AT tires which weren't included in Bridgestone/Firestone's August recall.
