AKRON (May 7)—Goodyear named Michael J. Roney president of the European Union unit, replacing Sylvain G. Valensi, who will be on special assignment reporting to Robert J. Keegan, the firm's president and chief operating officer. Goodyear did not elaborate on Valensi's new assignment; he has been Goodyear's top executive in Europe since 1996. Roney, 46 and a 20-year Goodyear veteran, was previously president of the company's Eastern Europe, Africa and Middle East business unit. He has held several posts, including president of Goodyear Mexico and vice president of the firm's Asia region. Jarro F. Kaplan, managing director of Goodyear Germany, succeeds Roney. A 31-year company veteran, Kaplan, 54, was managing director of Goodyear U.K. from 1996-1999, and prior to that he was sales and marketing director for Goodyear Europe in 1995.
