LIONVILLE, Pa. (May 1)—West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. will reduce its global salaried 1,600- employee work force 3 percent at a cost of about $2.6 million within the next three months in a effort to improve overall efficiencies. West management expects annual savings from the cutbacks, estimated at around 50, will be equal to the charge. The $2.6 million will cover severance and related benefits and be applied in the second quarter. The reduction is part of the firm's review of strategic alternatives to the way it currently operates. Company sales had been sliding until the first quarter when West recorded net income of $5.4 million, up slightly from $5.1 million in the same period last year. Sales rose 7 percent to $116.2 million.
