WASHINGTON (March 23)—U.S. tire manufacturers want a focused "early warning" system installed that can help identify potential safety-related issues with tires, motor vehicles and equipment. In comments submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Rubber Manufacturers Association said the agency should "take care to maintain its focus on the types of data that will most effectively produce such early warning, rather than casting a wide net seeking vast amounts of data that may not be reliable or relevant."
NHTSA is developing regulations to create an early warning system for tire defects as part of legislation passed in the wake of the Firestone tire recall.
